20 Delicious, Non-Dip Ways to Eat Hummus

Hummus is so much more than a dip. Yes, it’s great paired with veggies or pita chips (how I usually eat it), but there are plenty of other delicious ways to enjoy it. And it’s so simple and healthy, why not make it a bigger part of your diet? Here are 20 other ways to eat hummus.


  1. Hummus Toast: Spread your favorite hummus on some toasted, whole-grain bread. Top with avocado, red pepper, a fried egg, turkey slices or anything you can imagine, really. Hummus toast is a quick, filling lunch or even a savory breakfast.

  2. Hummus Lunch Wrap: Spread hummus on a tortilla, then layer it with sliced deli turkey (or chicken, or ham!), avocado, sprouts or whatever fillings you like. Roll up your hummus wrap and pair it with a side of fresh fruit for an easy packed lunch.

  3. Hummus Cups: For entertaining, why not turn hummus on its head and serve it in crescent roll cups? It’s an impressive look, but still super simple: bake crescent roll dough in a muffin tin, then fill the cups with hummus and your favorite veggies.

  4. Hummus Bruschetta: Toast some slices of French baguette, then top with a schmear of hummus as well as your usual bruschetta toppings: basil, tomato and some olive oil. It’s a fun Mediterranean twist on a favorite appetizer recipe!

  5. Hummus Cucumber Roll Ups: Pinwheel sandwiches are a classic, but try using strips of cucumber (sliced with a vegetable peeler) instead of tortillas and top with hummus, red pepper and turkey. Then just roll them up! Cucumber roll ups are great for parties or lunchboxes.

  6. Hummus Deviled Eggs: Deviled eggs are traditionally made with mayo, which is delicious, but sometimes you want something lighter. Try substituting hummus for a lighter, better-for-you deviled egg recipe. Top with smoked paprika, bits of bacon or chives.

  7. Hummus Chicken Salad: Chicken salad is another one of those mayo-laden classics. If you want to try a new twist, substitute hummus in your favorite chicken salad recipe. It’s delicious flavored with a little ranch seasoning, or you could use your favorite spice blend.

  8. Hummus Tacos: Refried beans are a classic taco filling, but why not try hummus instead? Black bean hummus makes for one delightful vegetarian taco. You could easily add some rotisserie chicken or ground beef for your meat eaters too!

  9. Hummus Sauce: Every good grilled dish needs a little sauce, right? Just blend hummus with citrus juice, Greek yogurt, balsamic glaze and your favorite Italian seasoning for a great creamy hummus sauce for chicken, pork, beef or even grilled vegetables.

  10. Hummus Burger Spread: Spread hummus on your burger bun in place of mustard, mayo or ketchup. Pair with Greek-style toppings like feta, onion and tomato.

  11. Hummus Sushi: Do you like to make sushi at home? Instead of using rice, stuff your seaweed with hummus as well as vegetables and/or your favorite fish (tuna or salmon, perhaps?). It’s not traditional, but it’s definitely delicious!

  12. Guacamole Hummus: Combine your favorite hummus with fresh avocados and a little lime juice for a delicious twist on guacamole. It’s great on tacos.

  13. Hummus-Crusted Chicken: Coat chicken breasts in hummus and then bake at 450 degrees F for 30-35 minutes. It’s a no-flour way to get a crispy crust on chicken, with very little work!

  14. Dairy-Free Mashed Potatoes: Add hummus to mashed potatoes instead of butter and milk for a creamy, dreamy, vegan-friendly mashed potato recipe (with a little added garlicky kick!).

  15. Hummus Pizza: Go for a Greek-style pizza by topping plain crust with hummus, tomatoes, olives, feta, onions and roasted garlic. Who needs tomato sauce when you have this rich, delicious alternative?

  16. Hummus Poppers: Take peppadew peppers (find them on your grocery store’s olive bar or in jars in the Italian section) and stuff them with hummus. Serve with olives and other “relish tray” staples as an appetizer. You could also stuff cherry tomatoes in the same way.

  17. Hummus Pasta Sauce: Instead of using heavy cream and cheese, combine hummus with a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar for a creamy, dairy-free Alfredo-style sauce. Or mix the hummus with sesame oil and soy sauce for an Asian variation.

  18. Salad Dressing: Whisk hummus with fresh lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper for a healthy salad dressing that has lots of creaminess but fewer calories. It’s perfect tossed with greens like kale, spinach and radicchio.

  19. Hummus Soup Thickener: Do you want your broth-based soup to be a little creamy? Add a tablespoon or so of hummus to minestrone, chicken noodle soup, vegetable soup or any other brothy soup for a creamier texture.

  20. Hummus Roasted Vegetables: Roast your favorite vegetables, like butternut squash, carrots, cauliflower, onions and zucchini, then toss with hummus as a flavorful dressing.
